Coat of Arms of the Franciscan Order, Luca della Robbia the Younger(1525)

in italiano

Today I went to see an exhibition of works by the della Robbia family at the Museum of Fine Arts, in Boston: a unique opportunity on this side of the ocean.

I also realized that I knew very little about their works and their masterful technique, so innovative and then forgotten.

There was a beautiful Resurrection that somehow reminded me of the one by Piero; the Resurgent Christ has his feet on the ground, to be exact on the sarcophagus. There was also a nice Saint Donatus of Arezzo. I wonder who sold it to Princeton University in 1921.

I recognized immediately the coat of arms of the Franciscan order with both hands with the stigmata in this 1525 medallion by Luca della Robbia the Younger. Pascale suggested to me to look carefully at those crossed hands. I did it and for the first time I realized: the anatomy of those hands is wrong. In that position you should see the back and not the palm of the hand.

Is there in all this any hidden meaning unknown to me? Maybe it’s just another miracle.
